What a crew (of 33 anglers) that showed up to fish the 3rd event of West Texas Kayak fishing’s 2016 season on Oak Creek Reservoir just south of Sweetwater, TX. From the chatter around the weigh-ins it sounds like the white bass where schooling hard around the main lake this weekend. Too bad those are the wrong species! Oak Creek is a beautiful lake and perfect size for kayak fishing and apparently has multiple species to go target. If your ever driving by it is worth tossing a kayak in and fishing.
The largemouth proved hard to catch on a lake that the water has been on a steady rise since last year including some heavy rains for about a week leading up to the tournament. There were 7 anglers that managed to put together multiple fish stringers and a couple that managed 1 fish shy of a full 5 fish stringer. We also had several people fish this event as their first ever kayak tournament. I hope you all had fun.
Congratulations to the following anglers for figuring out the fish on what turned out to be a grinding day.
1st Place and Big Bass Lane Grant from Shallowater ($693 for 1st and $320 for Big Bass)
2nd Place Michael Anaya from San Angelo ($198)
3rd Place Blake Thornton from Saginaw ($99)
I cant wait until June 11th for the Lubbock Road Runner event. I hope we can continue to grow and meet new faces every event.
